Our Story

SOS (Southend on Sea) Rape Crisis started in 2011, although there had been a Rape Crisis Centre in Southend previously this was closed due to lack of funding from local of central Government to provide specialist support for Survivors. But in 2011 The Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Fund (RASASF) was part of the Government’s commitment to quadruple funding for victim support services by 2025 compared to 2010. The RASASF meant that Southend Rape Crisis Centre could start again offering specialist support.

In April 2021, we took a significant step by becoming a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), under charity number 1194207.

Since the day we started we've been supporting survivors of all forms of sexual violence, whether it's abuse or assault, regardless of when it occurred in their lives.

Our reach extends to individuals residing in Southend-on-Sea, Castle Point, and Rochford. As an accredited member of Rape Crisis England and Wales, our commitment to delivering quality support is unwavering. We adhere to The Rape Crisis National Service Standards, ensuring that survivors and their loved ones receive services of the highest standard.

Collaboration is at the heart of what we do. Partnering with SERICC (West and South) and CARA (Centre for Action on Rape and Abuse) under the umbrella of SYNERGY allows us to extend our support across Essex, ensuring no survivor is left without assistance.

Our services are inclusive, spanning across age, gender, and background. Children as young as 4 years old can access our support, with specialised assistance available for parents of younger children.

At SOSRC, we champion intersectional feminism, recognising and addressing the multitude of challenges faced by women and girls. Our approach acknowledges various aspects of identity, such as age, class, race, physical and mental health, among others, ensuring that our support is tailored and inclusive.

Our dedication to survivors and their communities drives everything we do. Join us on our journey towards empowerment, healing, and justice.
